Top bikers take on Nelson hills

Nelson’s hills have taken a pounding over the weekend as the country’s top mountainbikers compete in the annual Giant Top Gun event. The event consists of the three main disciplines of mountainbiking over three days, finish-

ing Monday. The first day is dedicated to downhill, the second day is cross country and the third enduro. Nelson riders were doing well after the first day with local rider Reuben Olorenshaw winning the elite men’s grade

and Sam Todd the senior men. The Top Gun event is now part of the Nelson Bike Festival, which runs for the next two weeks. Full results were not available at the time of print but full details are at nelsonlive.co.nz.

New tourism figures have backed up what people are noticing on the streets of Nelson - it’s been a big year for industry. New figures from Nelson Tasman Tourism show a dramatic 7.7 per cent increase in the number of people staying the night compared to the previous year-end November statistics - exceeding the national average of 4.8 per cent. Last month, Nelson Weekly was first to report the dramatic increase of visitors to the region, with Nelson Airport recording a 23 per cent increase in the number of passengers flying in and out of the region, which has been largely fuelled by three new airlines operating to the region. Lynda Keene, chief executive of Nelson Tasman Tourism, says it’s a “great result” for the region, which has built on the steady growth that they have seen since July last year.

International guests staying the night were also up 6.7 per cent just pipping the national growth result of 6.6 per cent. Domestic guest nights increased 8.2 per cent, compared to the national result of 3.7 per cent growth. The region’s average length of stay also increased 6.33 per cent, which was the highest increase nationally. Lynda says, “without a doubt,” the launch of Kiwi Regional Airlines, Jetstar and Originair have contributed to visitor growth. “The region has received significant additional exposure by airlines promoting Nelson as a new destination and we’ll continue to work with them to ensure the early growth trends with increased passengers will continue over the next twelve months,” she says. Lynda says the strong performance can also be attributed to strong marketing campaigns to promote

the region’s many festivals and expos. Lynda says the summer season has now “kicked in to high gear” with lots

of Kiwis and international visitors soaking up the sun and enjoying the great outdoors and retail, food and wine. Nelson i-SITE visitor numbers are also up by 15 per cent.

“We anticipate continued growth from travellers over the next two years and it’s heartening to see tourism being such a positive economic contributor to the regional economy.”

Astronomer discovers massive supernova

3

Need it built now?

Kate Russell

An amateur astronomer from Nelson has played a key role in discovering what could be the “most luminous” supernova ever detected – all from his own observatory, tucked away in the backyard of his Washington Valley property. Brent Nicholls has been working with a group of professional astronomers from Ohio State University, who run the ASASSN project (All Sky Automated Survey for Supernova), to find the rare exploded star which, at its brightest, was 570 billion times bright than the sun. The keen astronomer says he’s only had his own observatory for the past four or five years, with his 30cm telescope on loan from a friend in Canterbury, but it’s been his main hobby for the past three decades. Brent says the ASASSN group, who are mostly located in the northern hemisphere, observe the sky every night, looking for transient objects. He is only the Kiwi to belong to the group. “When new objects are picked up, an alert is sent out to half a dozen of us who follow it up, getting more detailed pictures,” he says. “If there’s something

The supernova is almost four billion light years from Earth and will be able to be seen for another year or so with the humble telescope before it fizzles out. “We think it’s a very big star that’s come to the end of its life and collapsed, and as it has collapsed it’s formed a neutron star in the middle,” he says. “It

continues to collapse, but the material has bounced off and that’s ripped the rest apart and that’s the light we see.” Brent, who has had been part of the ASASSN team for the past 18 months, says they found 179 supernova last year alone. The group is planning to use the Hubble Space Telescope later this year to get a closer look at the supernova’s host galaxy for clues to what triggered the blast. The discovery will also feature in an article written by Subo Dong from Peking University, which will be published in Science magazine.

Romance writers hope to get Nelson hearts fluttering Jessie Johnston

After a year of hard work, the Nelson Romance Writers Group has compiled a book of romantic short stories that will bring a smile to your lips and a blush to your cheeks, just in time for Valentine's Day. It's been a steep learning curve for the group, from the introduction of the idea by the group's convener Annika OhlsonSmith, last year, to the collection of material, proofing of the stories, right through to the cover art and it's printing. The anthology called "Ripples" features a mixture of short stories, poems and novel

excerpts, some with a Nelson twist and all of them showcasing a variety of romance writing styles. Created in 2002, the group is a chapter of Romance Writers of New Zealand, and currently involves 18 local members, 12 of whom contributed to the book. "I've only been in it a couple of years, I've always loved writing and [a colleague was talking about] how much fun she was having in the group, so I asked 'can I come' and she said 'most definitely'," says Heather Holmes. Annika joined the chapter around 10 years ago after she wished to learn to write her stories in English as well as Swedish,

her mother tongue. "We are a mix of really lovely and talented people, we have such fun at our meetings, as the chairperson and convener I sometimes have to say 'come on girls, stop giggling.' We have had meetings when my husband is home and he can't help hear things, and he comes out when all the girls are gone and says, almost blushing, 'I can't believe this, do you women really talk about these things?'" While romance writing is the nuts and bolts of the group, creating pure Mills & Boon-style literature is by no means a requirement, any stories involving relation-

ships can benefit from the group's ideas and criticisms and the chapter already includes both professional and amateur romance writers. "Ripples" will be launched on Valentine's Day, Sunday, February 14, at Page & Blackmore's from 2pm, and the group invites everyone to come along. Contributing authors will be reading from the book and talking about its conception, while pink champagne and nibbles will be on offer. Copies of the book can be purchased for $20, with eBook versions just 99 cents. For more information on the group contact nelsonromancewriters@xtra.co.nz.

Schools are back… School is back and that means there will be more children out and about, especially in the mornings and afternoon. The basic message around schools is: slow down and look out for kids. In many places around Nelson electronic variable school speed limit signs will be turned back on. Reducing your speed to 40km/h provides for a much increased reaction time for a driver, meaning you can identify potential hazards and react much more quickly.

School crossings Pedestrian crossings are places where pedestrians should be able to cross the road in safety. Drivers need to slow down as they approach them and be prepared to stop. Students and families need to remember to use the correct place to safely cross the road outside the school. So be extra careful around schools and watch out for kids!

20 km/h past a stationary school bus Remember – the speed limit for passing a stationary school bus when children are getting on and off is 20 km per hour. This speed limit applies no matter which direction you are travelling in.

Drivers – school bus incidents can happen

on both high and low speed roads. However, the faster your vehicle is travelling, the more likely it is that a child will be killed if they are hit.

Parents – when dropping off or collecting

your child from the school bus, try to do it so that you are on the same side as the bus. This will cut out the need for your child to cross the road. Park your car well away from the bus stop or other children so you don’t block drivers, children’s or the bus driver’s visibility. Get out of your car and meet your child or walk with them to the designated bus stop.

Students – wait at the nominated bus stop

area and stand well back from the road edge. Bus stops have usually been chosen as a safer place to stop. After you have got off the bus wait as far away from the road edge as possible, until the bus has moved away. If you need to cross the road, wait until the bus has driven off and you can see clearly up and down the road.

Thank you.

Buskers bring colour to CBD Fire eating, an execution, a contortionist and giant bubbles were just some of the weird and wonderful entertainments on offer at this year's Nelson Buskers Festival. Kicking off on Thursday, January 28, the festival attracted crowds of people, both visiting and local, for three days of street performances. This year's international line-up included acts from Japan, Australia, Canada, the UK and New Zealand, and of course, the hesitant assistance of the public.

Nelson's Miles Clifford got a lot more than he bargained for when he sat down to watch Canadian mime Madame Guillotine (aka Marie Antoinette), becoming a main feature in her performance which resulted in his unsuccessful beheading. Although he played a larger part than he was anticipating, Miles said he enjoyed his brief stint as a street performer, "it's all part of the entertainment." The buskers also offered two R18 shows at The Boathouse on Thursday and Friday night.

Pet Caskets, Tuesday, January 19: After his piece in the Nelson Weekly, Wal Dalley received a handful of enquiries regarding his pet caskets, which he creates and sells to the crematorium for people wishing to keep their pets ashes. News of his caskets has travelled around the country and even resulted in an invitation to appear on John Campbell’s radio show, which Wal says was scheduled to air either last Saturday or Monday, plus a filmed version will be put up on Youtube. Water for Prosperity, Tuesday, January 26: Water for Prosperity spokesperson David Barnes says Friday’s tournament was a great success with the rain clearing just in time. “We had a very good day, the numbers haven’t been tallied yet but we probably raised about $5,000,” he says. The tournament attracted players from as far as Auckland and was won by Grant Thorn and Keri Kotua. A few groups got the opportunity to play with Sir Bob Charles and Susan Farron, and David says next year they will be putting in an invite for Lydia Ko to attend. They also had a very successful auction led by Jeff Rackley with everything being sold, but they will still need to do some more fundraising before they head over to Zimbabwe in June.

TUG OF PEACE: Downer Construction on their way to beating six-time reigning champions Nelmac, at the Nelson Tasman Hospice Tug of Peace competition on Trafalgar St last Wednesday. Eight teams competed in the event. Hospice fundraising manager Paul McIntyre says it’s great to see people enjoy it “and give at the same time.” “A huge thanks to Phil Wright who has organised it since the beginning, and to all the teams taking part and their companies. “It will be back next year, bigger and even better.”

Organisers of the Brightwater Wine and Food Festival are doing everything they can to make people feel welcome at this year’s event. Enjoying the region’s craft beers, wine, food and entertainment has always been the heart and soul of the festival, now in its twelfth edition, and organisers say this year offers absolutely no excuse for not being there. Richmond Rotary’s Kevin Gear says 2016 will see an even stronger focus on making paint | wallpaper | curtains | blinds the festival a family day out, with supervised children activities once again being organised by Brightwater School in conjunction with Blast Entertainment. They will include Noddy Train rides, a bouncy castle, zorb balls and face painting. People are encouraged to use alternative transport to get to the festival so they can enjoy a wine and beer without having to worry about the journey home. Weeds around streams: I am a recent Brook St resident using the Willow walkway for frequent excursions to town and have been horrified at rampant weed growth in the stream adjacent to the Bronte St foot bridge, willow seedlings establishing quickly and other

weeds forming a mat from bank to bank. Another area is the new footpath island on the corner of Brook and Bronte St east that has not been planted and is now an eyesore of metre high weeds. This is a lovely area to live in, but can quickly depress if the basic maintenance is not addressed regularly. Glenda Poole.

PENKETH PROPERTY LAW

It has been interesting to read the comments regarding the state of local streams. We have complained about the noxious weeds on the banks of the Poorman's Stream for months and the only action taken is to slash at the fennel, which is left to rot. It is an absolute disgrace, unsightly and a health hazard. A phone call to the council does not achieve anything. We have lived in this area for over a year and the grass is seldom cut in a nearby reserve and trees and shrubs are hardly ever trimmed. The council's aim to achieve clean streams and habitats is a pipe dream unless planning and action occurs. G. Kingston

Yet when the manager's friends came back from university they all got jobs there and were complaining about their pay - which was $1 per hour more than I was on. They would stand around gossiping yet my hours were cut so they could get more. I ended up leaving when at my pay review they offered me an extra 10 cents per hour. Alicia Moke.

You have already got a great mayor. Vote Rachel in again. Heather Waters. Bring back Aldo Miccio and look at the future. Domenico Palumbo. Restaurants short of staff: A lot of these restaurants need good staff willing to work hard. In order to keep that quality standard high they can't be wasting time on staff with no passion for the industry who ruin their reputation. There are plenty of unemployed out there, but who wants to hire someone who is just going to destroy their business. Josephine McKay.

True. Spent some time in Italy with my wife's family and noticed that both waiting staff, and the establishments they work for, take service very seriously. Waiting on people is considered a legitimate profession, and people are paid well (certainly not minimum wage) to do it. David West.

Guess the minimum wage ain't cutting it. I see Nelson employers always and openly complaining about a lack of workers skilled or otherwise. But when a skilled top notch experienced worker walks in the door the employer immediately tries shafting them in a million little ways....making that particular place pretty unappealing. Rayon Mackenzie.

Employ anyone who needs a job. Sunshine wages or not, you only have to be serious about working. I am not qualified or have recent experience in this area. But I have just been given the best chance I've been waiting so long for. Just go out and grab your opportunity. There are jobs out there. Do it for Nelson. Your confidence. Yourself. Man! It feels great! And I don't start until next week! Andrea Grocott.

SATURDAY 6 FEBRUARY 2016 PRACTICE/QUALIFYING: from 10am-10.30am

www.ndra.co.nz

Race day starts around 10am with practice and qualifying runs, allowing drivers the chance to familiarise themselves with the track and how their car performs on it. Then the real action will kick off at 12pm. Those chasing points will be positioned on a ladder according to their performance in the qualifying passes. From noon until 4:30pm they will be whittled down until a winner is determined for each class. While drag racing offers the opportunity to get up Andy Irwin-Wells in action at close and per- national series. sonal with the action on the tarmac, an added bonus is their open-door policy in the pit area, allowing people to walk around the competing cars as they’re being worked on by the race crews, or even have a word to the drivers about their cars and the world of drag racing. The NZDRA New Zealand National series will feature a number of different classes, from street bikes and fully-fledged drag bikes, to junior

dragsters, street cars, muscle cars, door cars and full drag cars, offering plenty of action for any petrol head. Don’t miss out on the drags this weekend, Saturday, February 6, with adults tickets just $15, 12-16 years $5 and children under 12 are free. There will be Eftpos available at the gates on the day and a selection of food and drink will also be available for purchase. John reminds spectators that it is normally a very last year’s NDRA round of the hot day out on the airfield so people need to look after themselves by bringing a wide brim hat and plenty of sunscreen. When the excitement of the day is over, feel free to join the drivers and supporters at Armadillos Bar and Restaurant on Richmond’s Queen St for the prize giving and after race function. If the weather is unsuitable on the day, racing will be postponed until Sunday, February 7.

New accessible bus for NBus Stoke Loop. From 15 February this year, the Stoke Loop Hail and Ride NBus route will be serviced by a new wheelchair-friendly, kneeling bus, meaning better accessibility for people with impaired mobility.

Stoke Library is the heart of your community with something for everyone. All ages will find something to excite and entrance, with a wide range of books and other media available.

The Stoke Loop runs in a figure 8 from the Tennis Courts on Main Road Stoke, to Enner Glynn, Nayland Road, Saxton Road and the Ridgeway. It connects with routes 1 and 2, which run between Nelson and Richmond, so it’s an easy, cheap and accessible way to get to the shops or work.

Whether you’re looking to lose yourself in the exciting world of fiction or need to dive into some research, the library offers an excellent resource. Stoke Library is full of entertainment, inspiration and information waiting for you – newspapers, magazines, books for all ages, DVDs, audio books and so much more.

With school starting this week, The Stoke Loop Bus is the perfect way to get the kids from schools on Nayland Road to after-school sports at Saxton Field – see the timetable for bus times. The Stoke Loop bus is hail and ride, so you can wave down the bus anywhere as long as it is safe and legal for it to stop.

From mid-February, a new kneeling bus will service the NBus Stoke Loop route, making the bus more accessible for people with impaired mobility.

Sit, relax and read the latest magazines, or cruise the shelves to find that ‘must-have read’ to take home.

Access the library computers, bring your own laptop, or use the free wifi. Stoke Library also has online access to a wide range of NZ and international newspapers. Come in and explore what the Stoke Library can offer you.

New Zealand First and Richard Prosser MP are pleased to have become part of the Stoke and Nelson community by opening an office. Nelson is recognised for its strong retail, fishing, forestry and agriculture industries. We want to make sure Nelson’s fastest growing suburb and the entire Nelson and Tasman regions get the support they need. Supporting regional New Zealand has always been a pillar of NZ First policy – we say New Zealand’s prosperity depends on regional prosperity. The regions have been neglected by the National Government and NZ First is determined to change that. The Rt Hon Winston Peters’ byelection win in Northland was a strong first step towards holding the government to account and demanding a fair go for our regions. Our office at Stoke Central Mall is now open. Richard and his staff are happy to support Nelsonians with any issue, so don’t hesitate to pop in during office hours, Tue-Fri 9-30 to 2-30, or phone or email. We’re here to listen and help with any issues.

One Dental Stoke is proud to introduce Joo Kim as its most recent staff member, after she joined the team in September last year. Joo trained as a dentist in Dunedin and graduated in 2012 before spending a year working at Wellington Hospital. She has also spent time volunteering overseas, first in Tanzania while she was still at dental school and later in both the Philippines and Papua New Guinea, her work there included oral health care as well as assisting in orphanages. As well as helping people with their dental requirements and relieving their pain, Joo says a big part of her decision to become a dentist was to be able to help her clients feel more confident about their teeth. To start the New Year with a smile, make an appointment with One Dental today. Contact the practice on 547 7725 and experience their professional, caring dental service.

Ben says his two chosen sports complement each other and have helped improve his game in both sports. “[Basketball] skills, like short explosive speed, is good for touch, as well as ballhandling skills and vision. I’ve also had to use my jumping from basketball from time to time on the touch field.” The selection to the New Zealand open mixed touch team came after a training camp in Auckland late last month. He will be joined in the team by fellow Nelsonian Nicole Drummond, who made her debut last summer. Ben says his father Wayne – a fellow NZ touch representative – has been a huge influence on him as a touch player and helped train him over the years. When Ben was told that he’d been selected at the training camp, he says he wanted to let his dad know, but he had no credit on his phone. “I had to wait until I got to the airport where

there was free wifi and send him a message on Facebook. He was pretty happy.” Ben is heading to Christchurch next week to begin university studies, where he will train to become an engineer. He hopes to play for the Canterbury Rams in the National Basketball League and carry on with his touch training. “I love both sports, if I had to choose one I couldn’t, and thankfully they haven’t crossed over too much so I can do both.” New Zealand will host the trans-Tasman touch series this April in Auckland.
